Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Community Members,
We really appreciate the efforts of our many volunteers and try to make the arrangement to be hassle free for all stakeholders.
To ensure that everyone in the school community are safe, we will be introducing the new Working with Children guidelines at Ashdale Primary School. For most parties, it will only involve completing one declaration form.
Please ensure you are familiar with the adjustments that are explained later in the Newsletter.
Academic and Effort Certificates
The first Academic and Endeavour certificates will be sent home with students this week. Students will be recognised for their efforts which is illustrated in the Semester Reports. If a student received one A or more, they will receive an Academic Certificate and/or they receive 8 or 3 consistently in the Attitude, Behaviour and Effort section, they will receive an Effort Certificate.
This initiative is about students striving to reach their goals and be recognised on the attainment of these goals. It is one element of a recognition structure that is explained in the attachment.
Carnivals
Term Three is always exciting, as we have our faction and interschool carnivals. The faction carnival is provides an opportunity for students to become immersed in the culture of sportsmanship and being part of a team. Belonging to a team and identifying with being a team member is such an important element of being a successful and happy person. This is the term were students really identify with our Factions; Perkins, Cooper, Freeman and Elliott.
Ask any past student, and they’ll remember what faction they were in!
Charity Day
Ashdale Primary School recently held its annual charity Day and raised $1240.90 for the Starlight Foundation. The pyjama dress up day and fun lunchtime events, conducted by year six students and dedicated parent volunteers, were such a success. Well done to all involved.
Regards
Tony Watson
Changes to Working with Children (Screening) Act 2004
We thank all our parents who generously volunteer their time and energy to support our school community. There are some changes to the Working with Children Check policy, to ensure the safety of children when we have volunteers in the school.
If you would like to volunteer at our school, you will need to sign a ‘Parent and child volunteer declaration form’. You cannot volunteer if you have a current Working with Children Negative Notice or Interim Negative Notice.
These changes affect parents who are engaged in volunteer work. For example, you are considered a volunteer when you assist with activities such as reading sessions, day excursions, canteen duties, helping at a sports carnival or carrying out P&C duties.
You are not a volunteer when:
- picking up and dropping off your child
- observing events like school assemblies
- attending parent and teacher interviews
- visiting the uniform shop.
If your circumstances change, and you are issued with a Negative Notice or Interim Negative Notice after completing the ‘Parent and child volunteer declaration form’, you must advise the principal.
A current Working with Children Check is required by all other family members and friends over 18 years of age who want to volunteer.
It is a collective responsibility to ensure the safety of our children. We appreciate your ongoing support and dedication to our school community.
2023 Athletics Faction Carnival
It’s Faction Carnival time again! Perkins, Freeman, Elliott and Cooper will once again compete for Ashdale's Faction Shield.
Ashdale’s week of athletics will commence with events on Tuesday 22nd August, while the grand carnival day will be held on Friday, 25th August. Fingers crossed for good weather and come along to cheer your children and support your faction.
As Carnival Day is a very busy day for students and teachers, we ask that parents of students in years PP to 6 please refrain from entering competition and bay areas during the day.
Students should come to school fully prepared to be self-sufficient until lunch time. During the lunch break, students will be allowed to leave the competition areas and sit with family until the end of the lunch period at which time they are to promptly return to their faction bay.
If students are required to leave school early, parents will need to follow standard school policy by signing students out at the office and then present the teacher supervising their child with a pink slip before the student can be released.

Italian Festival 2023 – Primary Schools Competition
Earlier this term, several students from Years 1-5 participated in a competition run by Italo Australia Welfare Cultural Centre. For each year group there was a different task to complete, all centred around the theme of ‘Carnevale’. ‘Carnevale’ is a joyous carnival that takes place in Italy each year, particularly well-known in the city of Venice, where participants dress in elaborate costumes and enjoy masquerade balls, parades and celebrations all around the country.
Ashdale students produced some creative works and all students who took part are to be commended for their efforts. There were some award winners from Ashdale, a particularly excellent achievement given over 25 Western Australian schools participated, and hundreds of students entered the competition.
Only three entries per year group were permitted for submission. Congratulations to the following students whose entries were chosen to represent Ashdale, with 5 entries receiving a ‘Certificate of Merit’.

City of Wanneroo | NEW Junior Basketball Competition | Kingsway Indoor Stadium
In response to the local basketball community's desire for increased game time, we are thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new Junior Basketball competition. This exciting initiative aims to satisfy the growing need for competitive basketball opportunities among young athletes, fostering their skills and providing another avenue for individuals to participate in a dynamic and engaging sport within the community.
We understand there is a desperation for thousands of children on waiting lists across Perth, with all other competitions full as at this point in time. Early next month, we will be installing two additional basketball courts funded by The City of Wanneroo, further expanding our capacity to accommodate the growing demand for basketball in our community
Participation in the Junior Basketball competition offers numerous benefits beyond simply playing the sport. It instils valuable life skills such as teamwork, discipline, leadership, resilience and inclusivity. These traits not only contribute to success on the court but also translate into other aspects of the participants' lives, including their academic pursuits and personal relationships.
In keeping with our commitment to inclusivity, the Junior Basketball competition welcomes players of all skill levels. We encourage newcomers to join and experience the joy of basketball, while more experienced players can challenge themselves and refine their abilities.
In conclusion, the launch of the brand-new Junior Basketball competition represents an important milestone for Kingsway Indoor Stadium. We are enthusiastic about providing the local basketball community with enhanced opportunities for game time, skill development, and friendly competition. We invite all young athletes to join us on this thrilling journey, as we work together to shape a promising future for basketball and nurture a community that is passionate about sports and personal growth.

P&C News
It’s hard to believe we are half way through the school year already. The P&C have been hard at work organising our events for Term 3. We hope you have saved the date for our second-ever Colour Run on Thursday 21 September – this was a highlight for both the kids and the adults last time we ran it so we hope it will be bigger and better this time!
We will also host our annual Disco events on Thursday 19 October (save the date!). We held a very successful barbeque on disco night last year and would love to offer the same to our community for 2023 but we do require a BBQ coordinator to make this a reality. We have a brand new BBQ begging to be christened with some yummy sausages so if you fancy yourself a BBQ aficionado perhaps this is the opportunity for you. Please email the P&C via the email below if you can help - daggy dance moves optional, but most definitely encouraged!
We will have delegates representing Ashdale Primary School P&C at the upcoming WACSSO annual conference later this month and look forward to showcasing the amazing efforts of our P&C. The theme is ‘Mine, Yours, Ours: Taking Collective Care of our Children’ and aims to capture the collective responsibility we have for the safety and education of our children and we hope to feedback at the following P&C meeting about the presentations.
Finally, we have had to say farewell to our previous newsletter contributor and are on the hunt for a parent or community member with a love of writing to submit a short summary of the P&C happenings for submission to the Ashdale newsletter a couple of times per term. If this sounds like you please get in touch via email PandC@ashdale.org.au.
